Airlines sell a service of travel (obviously). The difference is, the planes are going to fly anyway, so if a seat is open, why not give it to your own employees for free, or sell it to offline employees for a small charge??

Alaska has done that very well with SEA, in part because of their lock on the Alaska market. For us, AS is basically the only offering of direct flights to BOS, DC, Miami, Orlando, etc. Almost all the competition has a connection, so AS picks up a couple hundred $ extra for being direct.

How were Alaska Airlines services to Russia in the 1990s!?
Someone mentioned here that Alaska Airlines flew to the Russia Far East in the 1990s. What cities did they serve? What was the equipment? I assume they ended it because it was unprofitable. I believe this was in the era of Russia opening up to the world after the fall of communism.
